Burnout

What Is Burnout?

Burnout becomes a hard-core and costly reality …

Bosman, Rothmann, and Buitendach (2005) define burnout as a particular, multidimensional and chronic stress reaction that goes beyond the experience of mere exhaustion and is seen as final step in a progression of unsuccessful attempts to cope with negative environmental demands.

Symptoms manifest on three levels: individual, interpersonal and organizational.

Symptoms further manifest within 5 areas: physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual, such as Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization and Decreased Personal Accomplishment.

Who Is At Risk?

YOU!

Every person exposed to a situation that demands more than the body could give, whether taking care of the ill or elderly, managing a team, being the CEO or just trying to juggle zillions of roles and responsibilities at the same time, etc.

Burnout is a gradual process, it occurs over an extended period of time. It doesn’t happen overnight.  It can creep up on you if you’re not paying attention to the warning signals. It is universal and can happen to anyone.

Selfcare is a priority and necessity not a luxury.
